Individual Disability Insurance
Your ability to practice is the asset that paid for everything else. Individual disability coverage protects it — but only if the definition of disability matches the work you actually do.
The problem
One word in the definition decides whether the policy pays.
A surgeon who develops a hand tremor can still work. She can consult, teach, review charts, direct a department. Under a policy that defines disability as the inability to perform any occupation for which you are reasonably suited by education and experience, she may collect nothing. Under a true own-occupation definition, she is disabled because she can no longer perform the material duties of her specialty, and she can earn income doing something else while collecting.
That distinction is the entire product. Everything after it — benefit amount, elimination period, riders — matters far less.
Group long-term disability through an employer is a reasonable foundation and rarely sufficient on its own. It typically replaces a limited percentage of base salary, caps the monthly benefit, may exclude bonus and incentive income, is usually taxable when the employer pays the premium, and ends when the job does.
Coverage highlights we push for
- True own-occupation definition, specialty-specific where the market offers it
- Non-cancelable and guaranteed renewable so terms and premium cannot be changed
- Residual and partial disability benefits for reduced capacity rather than total loss
- Benefit amount coordinated with existing group long-term disability
- Future increase option to raise coverage as income grows without new underwriting
- Cost-of-living adjustment considered against its cost
- Catastrophic and student loan riders where they fit the situation
- Tax treatment of premiums and benefits explained before you choose the structure
Structure
The provisions that matter, in order
- Definition of disability
- True own-occupation pays if you cannot perform the material duties of your own occupation, even if you work elsewhere. Modified own-occupation pays only if you are not working. Any-occupation is the weakest. For specialists, a specialty-specific own-occupation definition is the meaningful version and is worth paying for.
- Non-cancelable versus guaranteed renewable
- Non-cancelable means the carrier cannot change your premium or terms. Guaranteed renewable means they cannot cancel but can raise premiums on a class basis. Non-cancelable is stronger and costs more.
- Residual and partial disability
- Most disability is partial rather than total. Residual benefits pay proportionally when you can work but earn materially less. Without it, a fifty percent income loss can produce no benefit at all.
- Benefit amount and coordination
- Carriers limit total coverage to a percentage of income across all sources. Existing group coverage offsets what an individual policy will issue, so the two should be designed together rather than bought separately.
- Elimination period
- How long you wait before benefits begin — commonly ninety or one hundred eighty days. Longer periods lower premium and require correspondingly more savings to bridge the gap.
- Benefit period
- How long benefits continue. To a stated retirement age is the common structure for professionals whose earning years are the asset being protected.
- Future increase option
- The right to buy additional coverage later without medical underwriting. For early-career professionals whose income will rise substantially, this is frequently the most valuable rider on the policy.
- Tax treatment
- Benefits from a policy you paid for with after-tax dollars are generally received income-tax-free; employer-paid group benefits generally are not. This changes how much coverage you actually need and should be settled before the amount is chosen.
What the engagement includes
How we approach it
Read the group policy first
We start with what your employer already provides and quantify the real gap — after caps, exclusions of variable income, and tax treatment.
Specialty-appropriate definitions
Which carriers offer true specialty-specific own-occupation for your specialty, and which quietly do not. It varies by carrier and by specialty.
Benefit sized to actual income
Including bonus, incentive and distribution income that group policies commonly leave out of the calculation.
Association and employer discounts
Where multi-life, association or employer-sponsored discounts apply, we use them.
Underwriting strategy
Existing conditions, hobbies and travel affect offers. How and when an application is submitted materially affects the outcome.
Claims support
Disability claims are documentation-intensive and frequently contested on the definition. We stay involved.
Working with RiskLinx
The right time to buy it is earlier than most people do.
Disability coverage is priced on age and health, both of which move in one direction. Early-career professionals get better definitions, lower premiums and future increase options that later applicants cannot obtain at any price.
If you already hold a policy, the useful question is whether the definition still matches what you do now.
